Abstract

Private letters – an important source for researchers. They carry great scientifi c value. They are especially valuable for studying the heritage of famous historical fi gures, because the letters are often cultivating thoughts that sometimes are not embodied in the scientifi c works. This essay offers to immerse into private correspondence of two famous personalities of the nineteenth century – Yakiv Holovatskyi and Olexander Dukhnovych who lived and worked in Galicia and Transcarpathia respectively – Ukrainian regions that were part of the Austrian Empire. The archives are the subject of special scientifi c value. The authors of the studied letters discussed extremely important issues, such as magyarization of intelligentsia of Transcarpathia, the infl uence of polonization on public life in Galicia and, as the consequence – rapid spread there russophile sentiments. In the analyzed letters we fi nd a lot of information that were proof of the existence of close contacts on both sides of the Carpathians; correspondence between people of Transcarpathia and Galicia to certain extent revived culture and education in the Region.
